TOMO: The Future of Vehicle Interface Systems

Eunice Young Tak, in collaboration with Lawrence Yang and Jung Yoon Shin, has created TOMO, a unique interface system for future cars. The project, sponsored by Toyota and Fujitsu Sen, spanned over 14 weeks at the Art Center College of Design. TOMO is designed to be a friend and full-time passenger, providing companionship, safety, assistance, and entertainment while driving.

The inspiration for TOMO came from the Tamagotchi virtual pets of the 1990s. Eunice Young Tak envisioned what she would want in a vehicle interface system in 10 years and brought it to life with TOMO. The name TOMO is an abbreviation of Tamagotchi, symbolizing the evolution of the virtual pet into a fully interactive, intuitive vehicle interface system.

What sets TOMO apart from other interface systems is its unique branding concept. Each letter in the TOMO logo is derived from the iconic Toyota logo, subtly preserving Toyota's brand equity. When combined, the letters reform the original Toyota logo, creating a fresh yet familiar look.

TOMO is not just a concept; it's a vision for the future. The team is developing a product that they aim to implement by 2020. With its unique features and forward-thinking design, TOMO is poised to redefine the driving experience, making it more social and enjoyable.

The innovative design of TOMO has not gone unnoticed. In 2012, it was awarded the Golden A' Interface, Interaction, and User Experience Design Award. This prestigious award is granted to outstanding and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, embody extraordinary excellence, and significantly impact the world with their desirable characteristics.
